With the main topics of conversation being whiskey, women, and sex, you will either love or hate the words of Sean Lind; realmendrinkwhiskey.com leaves no one in the middle.
Today we had a chance to sit down with the Vancouver based creator of RMDW and talk about his life, his blog, and most importantly: what whisky we should be drinking this holiday season.
First off, how did Real Men Drink Whiskey get started?
Oddly enough it started as a sort of work project. I used to work for a company I’d rather not name doing content marketing. I made the kind of content people share on facebook, things like What to Watch on Netflix. One day I was asked to make a blog to attract the “Maxim reading crowd”. So I came up with three blogs, my favorite of which being RMDW. So the first few posts on the site are pretty lame. Pictures of supermodels, super cars, and trite articles like How to Rate Women out of Ten.
Once they lost interest in the blog I got them to give over the domain and content to me, and which point I started writing articles about the things I actually wanted to say.
And what’s the goal of the blog now?
When I first took it over on my own all I knew was that I loved the domain, and wanted to start writing the advice I wish I could have given myself when I was 18. I figured if just one person found something useful it would be worth my time. Now that I’m starting to get consistent traffic that simple goal is starting to change. I would love, most of all, to quit my job and work for myself full time, so my blog is one of the ways I’m working towards that.
On your blog I saw a link to another page of yours where you offer BDSM coaching services?
Haha, yeah that’s entirely accurate. Instead of trying to force money out of my blog I figured I could keep it more focused on the content, and use it to funnel some traffic to my coaching site, seanlind.com.
And that’s working? People actually pay you for that?
Yeah… there are a lot of ways to learn something. For some people having a coach is the quickest way to get to where they want to be. I don’t have enough clients to do this full time, yet, but the clients I do have are extremely happy our sessions. It’s a bit of a tough gig to grow through word of mouth, since few men would want to admit to their friends they have a sex and relationship coach, nevermind the kink aspect of it all.
It’s clear, from comments and discussion, that blog is extremely polarizing. Just how much hate do you actually get? Does it upset you when people attack you personally because of the things you write?
I have pretty thick skin, and try not to take things people say on the internet too personally. The way I think, the way I live, is going to upset people, I know that. But for every piece of hate mail I receive I get five people writing to thank me. A big part of the hate is how I frame things, for example when I write articles about “how to be a man” I’m really writing an article about how to be a good, confident, person. My advice is 95% applicable to women as well, but it’s simply not marketable if I frame it that way. Plus, I don’t want to claim I can start writing on behalf or women, that would just open up an entirely new can of hate.
Does your blog ever bleed into your real life around Vancouver?
It does, but not nearly as often as I would like. I was invited onto a local podcast a couple of months ago, true bromance, where I talked about whiskey and dating. Despite polishing off a bottle of bourbon during the recording I didn’t say anything I regret. Hear the podcast here.
Also a girl I recently met has gained prestige in her circles with her whiskey sours she makes from my recipe. That one cracked me up.
That segways perfectly into my next question: what whiskey do you recommend for this holiday season?
Again I have to recommend my Original Whiskey Sour Recipe. With the egg-white foam on top it’s the perfect drink for cold nights. Just make sure you make this drink with Rye, and I’m talking real Rye and not Canadian Whiskey. While you can make a damn good bourbon sour, with the weather gone cold you should opt for the extra spice you’ll get from a good Rye. I suggest Bulleit of Rittenhouse for mixing.
If you want to drink some whiskey straight I have two suggestions for you to try. The first is the Glendronach 12 year old Sherry Cask. It’s just as great as many other scotches double its price. It’s sort of a cheaper, non-cask strength, version of the Aberlour A’bunadh.
But if you’re looking for the best value you can get for you money, look no farther than Alberta Springs 10 Year Canadian Whiskey. The same company that makes this also makes one of the world’s best rated Rye’s (The WhistlePig), and while different (and not 100% rye) this bottle is truly great and only $27 in a cold beer and wine.
If you could give just one piece of advice to all the men reading this, what would you say?
Work on being brutally honest. The best weapon you have for picking up women, and keeping them happy when you get them, is learning to be entirely honest, even when it’s terrifying.
The majority of relationship issues stem from a lack of trust, caused from a lack of honesty. Being honest is the best thing you can do for yourself, and your girl. If being honest is what ends your relationship, then it’s a relationship you should not be in.
But truthfully, being completely honest is really tough. The point is to try, and to start by being honest with yourself first.
What do you mean being honest with yourself?
Most people spend their lives trying to force themselves into some mould, or running away from who they really are. It’s often easier to ignore the truth, but it’s never going to make you happy in the end. You are who you are, and you need to accept that first, before you can work on changing it. Change is slow, and it will never happen if you’re too busy pretending to be someone else.
Do you have any final words or shout-outs?
Yeah, read my blog! But seriously, we live in an amazing city. Before you write me asking how you can find a girl, just step outside. This city is filled with beautiful women, they are everywhere. Grab one of them and take her to Fets, since they have the best whiskey selection in town. Or if you can’t find one, head to Fets alone, and grab a drink with a cutie by the bar.
